Eye bags
Whoops, what’s that showing? A swelling under the eyes? How did it get there? Whoever is suddenly confronted with puffy bags under the eyes has usually had a short night. Too little sleep and perhaps also a little too much alcohol often make themselves felt in swollen bags under the eyes. But not always. Read here what can cause puffy bags under the eyes and what you can do about unwanted bags under the eyes.
Puffy bags under the eyes – causes
Puffy bags under the eyes are clearly visible water or fat deposits under the eye, they extend from the lower eyelid to the cheekbone. Fluid retention usually occurs in the morning and can be caused by the hydrostatic pressure that water and blood exert on the body cells surrounding them. When lying down during sleep, this pressure increases. The result can be lymphatic congestion, since the fluid cannot easily drain away as it normally does when the body is standing.
Of course, the lying body position during sleep is not the only possible cause of puffy bags under the eyes. There must be other factors involved so that the normally existing balance of flow and drainage of lymph fluid is disturbed.
The main factor is skin aging. As we grow older, the connective tissue, which is already very delicate in the eye area, slackens. The lack of elasticity of the skin then favors the swelling of the bags under the eyes.
But there are other causes that can promote puffy bags under the eyes: These are, in addition to lack of sleep and older age, an unhealthy lifestyle, stress, excessive consumption of nicotine and alcohol, drugs and skin damage caused by sunlight.
Can bags under the eyes disappear again?
Yes, they certainly can! If they are only caused by fluid retention, for example after a short night, you can counteract them with a few quite effective home remedies or prevent them with a good moisturizer. Young skin in particular recovers more quickly from puffy bags under the eyes.
However, there are also puffy bags under the eyes that are caused by fat deposits in the skin. There is not much that can be done about this form of bags under the eyes, because they are usually permanent. If puffy bags under the eyes do not disappear, a visit to the doctor may be advisable, especially if they become larger over time. Then certain diseases, an iron deficiency or an allergy can be behind it.
Removal & Prevention
Let’s distinguish between prevention and acute treatment – for both situations we have put together the best tips for you:
Prevention of puffy bags under the eyes.
As is often the case, a healthy lifestyle with sufficient sleep and plenty of exercise in the fresh air is the best way to prevent puffy bags under the eyes. Also very helpful is the systematic use of a good hyaluronic eye cream, which helps the delicate skin around the eyes to retain moisture and keep its elasticity. Once you’ve gone a little overboard, you may be able to prevent the bags under your eyes from swelling with eye drops dropped in preventatively before bed.
Also avoid too much salt, which is suspected of promoting fluid retention. A higher pillow can also help keep the lymph flow going during the night.
In any case, it is important to supply the body with sufficient fluids – up to two liters of water a day should be enough.
