The story behind it: Dresden has always been known for innovation, and young baker Ferdinand Wilhelm Hanke was no exception. When he opened the doors of his German-Russian bakery in 1845, passersby were amazed to see the first edible alphabet in the window. Hanke called his original letter cookies "Russian Bread," inspired by a recipe he discovered during his apprenticeship in St. Petersburg. Known as "Bukwi" in Cyrillic, this treat is now a rarity in Russia, but "Russian Bread" remains a traditional favorite in Dresden to this day.
